Read, Cover, Remember, Retell

Here's an approach to help those readers at all grade levels who equate good reading with speed and forget or don't understand that reading well means you need to understand what you read.

It's called "Read-Cover-Remember-Retell" and was developed by Jan Ellison. It works best if two kids read the same text as partners. Each student silently reads a small portion of text, about the size that they could cover with their hand. After reading, they literally cover the text, turn to their partner, and try to remember and retell what they just read. If they leave out any information, their partner can fill in the missing details. They then switch roles to read the next section. Gradually, the idea is that they will no longer need to retell to a partner, but will be able to remember the text on their own.

This approach works well with any text a child might struggle comprehending informational text, content area textbooks, and even tests.
